Charming little village of about 180 inhabitants situated under the pass of Lus la Croix Haute, Lalley is a traditional village from Trièves. Haven of traditions, it has conserved its several basins that we can find in nearly all the roads, as well as the architecture of its arched houses made of scaly tiles.
For its quality of life and its charm, Lalley welcomed several important persons, such as Jean Giono, a french writer, who's romantic books were most of the time about the peasant" provencale" life. Place for his holidays after the war, in this beautiful region of moutains that he qualifies as a " Cloitre de montagnes", inspired his novels 'Le Chant du monde', 'Bataille dans la montagne' (situated in Tréminis), 'Un roi sans divertissement' (where the story takes place in a village corresponding to the location of Lalley).
Lalley received Edith Berger, known painter from Grenoble, that decided to live there, after her health troubles and following the advices of her doctor. Seduced by the beautiful landscapes inspiring her, she stayed there a first time in 1929 and set up finally in 1934. Adopted by this country, she never stopped celebrating it for 60 years.
