The village Monestier de Clermont (930 inhabitants) is the country town of the district, at an altitude of 850 meters.
Gateway to Trièves, under the pass of Fau, the village Monestier de Clermont owes its name to an abbey founded round about the 12th century, missquoting the french word "monastère" in Monestier. Clermont (Clearly-Mounts) would come from the brightness of the mountains. The two main squares are separated by large buildings that used to be a hospital of the knights of Malte.Monestier de Clermont is served by a train since 1878. It was an important event for the development of the village and its surroundings.
